At Austin Rising School, our commitment is to act as the telescope that brings the world into view for our students. Through immersive, hands-on learning, we aim to connect them with subjects in a way that sparks curiosity and inspires deep exploration.
As part of our current unit on the Middle Ages, last week our students had the unique opportunity to experience the world of falconry, thanks to a visit from Sky Kings Falconry. We extend a huge thank you to our guests for sharing their beautiful birds and teaching us about this fascinating tradition!
Falconry was more than just a sport in the Middle Ages; it was a symbol of nobility and status. The skill and resources required to train falcons made it a popular pastime for the upper class, with birds like peregrine falcons and gyrfalcons being associated with kings and princes(Medieval Britain) (TheMedievalGuide). The sport was not only a way for nobles to hone their hunting skills, but also a social activity where men and women could connect, sometimes even with romantic undertones (Medievalists.net).
Our students were mesmerized by the falconry demonstration and are now working on their final projects for this unit. We can’t wait to see how their creativity soars!
What’s Next? After we wrap up our journey through the Middle Ages, we’ll be diving into a new adventure: Canada! There is so much to explore about our northern neighbor, from its vast landscapes to its rich culture and history. Stay tuned for an exciting unit packed with learning and discovery.
